ocreations Designer Speaks in Duquesne University Online Course

ocreations designer, Laura Smith, was recently asked to join an online class at Duquesne University as a guest speaker among a panel of three other recent alumni.

Despite the global health pandemic, college students are still able to continue learning and working towards their degrees. With group video communication tools, such as Zoom, many universities and schools are transitioning to utilizing these platforms to finish out the school year. ocreations designer, Laura Smith, was recently asked to join a class at Duquesne University as a guest speaker among a panel of three other recent alumni.

Dr. Zeynep Tanes-Ehle (Dr. Z) is a professor in the Media Department at Duquesne. She primarily teaches advertising courses, ranging from the introductory courses, all the way to the capstone courses, so she can help students build the necessary skills for a career in the creative industry. She has a vast background in advertising, and has a passion for research.

The capstone course she teaches for soon-to-be graduates provides students the opportunity to apply all of the skills they’ve learned over the course of their college career, and execute an advertising campaign from start to finish.

The particular class session Laura was asked to speak in was a lecture about effective creativity in a campaign.

The lecture was mediated by Dr. Z, who asked a variety of questions to the guest alumni panel which included Laura and three other recent graduates:

Laurie, 2013 graduate, Content Specialist at Curi

Vanessa, 2017 graduate, Senior Marketing Specialist at PNC Bank

Caitlin, 2018 graduate, Account Executive at Red House Communications

With all different backgrounds and experiences, all of the alumni answers had unique perspectives on effectiveness and creativity in campaigns. The alum were also asked to give tips on staying creative on a daily basis, and finished up the lecture with an open Q&A session with the students, who asked more specific questions about some of the alumni’s roles, day-to-day workflow, and agency organization versus larger corporation creative department organization.

This was a great discussion that really got everyone a chance to tell the students about their personal journeys, and give tips on how to transition into the “real world” after graduation! A big shout out to Dr. Z for coming up with this idea, and for giving Laura (and Laurie, Vanessa, and Caitlin) the opportunity to be a part of it.
